Brewer High School English teacher Stephen Beach and his wife received more than 450 donated books and 350 notebooks from friends and family across the country as part of a recent social media campaign, Mr. Beach's Literacy Sponsors.
The donors wrote messages in each book to encourage Beach's ninth grade students to read. Each student in his classes received a book and notebook as a gift on the first day of school. The students bring it to class every day and read at least 10 minutes.
"They don't have to return it because the goal is for them to begin their own libraries at home," Beach said. "I've had students already finish several books, and I've had dozens tell me they used to hate reading but now they kinda like it," he said. Others ask, "Can we just read the whole class?"
